Hitting is a vital baseball skill. Watching a hitting DVD or taking hitting drills can help. So can some basic pointers.A ball the size of a peach comes ripping across the strike zone at 90 miles an hour. Wave your hand in front of your face as quickly as possible. What did you see? Try visualizing the ball curving away or suddenly dropping down. Major league hitters start their swing as the pitcher releases the ball. A ball tearing through the air at 90 miles an hour takes .5 seconds to cross the plate. It takes about .4 seconds to bring that bat around and across through the hitting zone. That allows for a tenth of a second to make a decision as to whether and where to swing. The cognitive process has no time to function like it does when people are carrying on a conversation. A batter must react, eyes, breath, brain and body are so connected that thoughts are pushed aside and instinct takes over. Instinct is not aan innate thing. It is what the body does after it has been trained to do it. There are different components that go into hitting well. Several of the elements; bat selection, positioning at the plate, stance and grip, all happen before the ball is thrown and the swing begins.
