The New England Patriots began their career in Boston, but moved to the suburb of Foxborough shortly thereafter. When they first began to play football, it was for the AFL; it was not until after the AFL/NFL merger that the Patriots became an NFL franchised team in 1970. Since then the Patriots have made quite the name for themselves, including two Super Bowl Championship titles. There is no doubt that Patriot fans expect another Super Bowl Championship title in 2009 and that Patriot tickets will be hard to come by.
The Patriots began their career in the AFL, and were the eighth football team – ever – to play as a professional AFL team. Billy Sullivan – owner of the team – and a local Boston artist worked hard to create a name and presence for the team – and succeeded with their existing colors and the name of the Boston Patriots.
These were tough times for any football team, but especially for the Patriots. The team did not have field to call home so they jumped from field to field – Fenway Park, Alumni Stadium, Nickerson Field, and Harvard Stadium. The Patriots made their first big league appearance in 1963 at the AFL championship game, but did not see another big game until more than 10 years later.
When the team became an NFL franchise and moved to the suburbs, they changed their name from the Boston Patriots to the New England Patriots. These changes were exactly what the team needed. Over the next 10 years, the Patriots played in the playoffs, and in 1978 played as the Eastern Division Champions. The season of ‘85 – highlighted by a Super Bowl appearance – brought such glory to the team, the city, and their fans, that tickets were impossible to get your hands on!
The New England Patriots have brought home a number of Super Bowl Championships, including Super Bowl XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX. The Patriots are the second team to ever win three Super Bowl games within a five year period; an amazing feat for any team. Additionally, they are one of only eight NFL teams to win two Super Bowl games in a row!
The combination of amazing coaching, performed by Bill Belichick, and astonishing leadership by quarterback Tom Brady, brought the Patriots to victory time after time. In the ‘03-’04 seasons, the Patriots broke records with an 18-game winning streak. As if this was not enough, they did it again with a 21-game winning streak in the ‘06-’08 seasons. No other NFL team has ever been able to accomplish this feat!
After many tough years, the Patriots proudly call Gillette stadium their home field. With no worries about jumping from field to field, the Patriots can focus on winning games and breaking records! They had a slow start but are now not only top in their division, but one of the best NFL teams to exist in the history of the NFL.
Fans expect nothing less than amazement in the 2009 season. Season tickets have already disappeared, and the remaining one-off seats will quickly be gone. There is no doubt this will be another record-breaking year for the Patriots and thousands will be stuck watching the wins on the big screen.
