Tea has been an element in our daily lives since ages. More popular in Britain and Europe, tea has been a very preferred drink among people. Whether it is for initiating your day or gaining green tea health benefits, tea is common to nearly every kitchen. Furthermore, people who are conscious about their health have experienced healthy tea as a helping hand in losing their pounds and keeping up a healthy living. Whatever is the reason, after coffee, tea is the most well liked beverage all over the world.
The origin of tea dates back to 2700 BC which has gone through many mythologies and tales about it. Even today there are many of modern myths associated with tea and its kinds.
1. Many consider white tea leaves as the baby tea leaf. This is not the reality. All leaves, white, green, and black, are young when they are used to make tea. White tea may be defined as the tea leaves that are uncured or unfermented. Sometimes it is also known as the steamed part during the drying procedure.
2. A common myth is that air is good for tea. This may not always be true. While air may be good for a few, it may not be good for the rest. Teas like pu’er are deeply fermented and carefully oxidized.
3. Many may think tea would taste best when it is old. This may not be the truth. Many teas lose their genuine flavor when they are left in air for long.
4. A myth might also suggest that some tea might be caffeine free. This is not true. All tea includes natural caffeine, termed as theine. However, do not confuse this with herbal teas for example, teas like chamomile are not derived from the tea plant, therefore the law does not apply to them.
5. Some might also believe that ice tea is same as hot tea. The reason why this is not true is that ice tea is usually served as an instant drink and is prepared by acidifying tea with ascorbic acid or citric acid. Finally, the mixture is heated at higher degrees. Moreover, studies have shown that caffeine levels are more improved in beverages when they are chilled. Ice tea would thus have higher sugar and caffeine content and lower antioxidant characteristics.
6. White tea is thought to be healthier than green tea. However, latest studies have declared green tea to have the highest levels of antioxidants.
7. A very popular mythology is that green tea has lesser caffeine content than black tea. Lab tests have showed this mythology incorrect because green tea has shown higher levels of caffeine as compared to black tea, and greater caffeine levels than coffee too.
8. White and black teas are also believed to be made from different plants. This is not true because both of the types are derived from Camellia Sinensis. The dissimilarity lies in their manufacturing process. Black tea is fermented; whereas green tea is heated in ovens. Few kinds of green tea may only be partly fermented.
