There are many new housing developments springing up all over the country and a lot of them are hoping to appeal to senior citizens. There is an entire age group of folks that are trying to buy something smaller in order to scale down and are looking at something more maintenance free than perhaps they have been used to. Along with new labor saving appliances in the kitchen, many people are now interested in outfitting their bathrooms with safer fixtures that will last them a lifetime. There is particular interest in hand rails and walk in tubs that can help prevent falls when getting into the bath. It is interesting to note that even though a walk in tub is a safety feature, it is also aesthetically pleasing and can fit into the bathroom setting without sacrificing decorating preferences.

Because so many people in their 60’s and 70’s are considering making a move to a smaller place to live it is important that the features of the many selections be considered carefully. These are merely a small number of choices for housing choices:

A smaller ranch style home is frequently the primary selection of many couples when it is time to move. The advantage to this, of course, is that there is still the privacy of owning a home. However, this choice includes the household tasks that for many people are becoming increasingly difficult to manage. For example, that yard that takes so long to mow can often be replaced with simply a little backyard patch that provides a lot of satisfaction but not the amount of work involved in current upkeep. Outside maintenance for a home also includes painting, replacing gutters, and maintaining roofs.

A condo or patio home in a 55 or older community is sometimes a good choice for people to consider. Here there is most often a HOA or Home Owners Association that is responsible for collecting a monthly fee that will cover certain home maintenance duties. Often these duties include yard maintenance, snow shoveling, outside painting and other related jobs. This can be a good option when people want to continue to have independent living but would like to give up the tasks that have become physically taxing to them or simply disdainful to do.

An apartment can be as large or small as desired and can offer wonderful protection when frequent traveling is an issue. This option offers much less upkeep to the owner or renter and provides security in the form of enclosed surroundings and nearby neighbors.

Retirement communities are also turning into fairly well-liked ideas and these organizations usually offer everything from independent living in the form of condos or apartments right up to assisted living and nursing care for their residents. There is a school of thought these days that it pays to research carefully and then decide which development most meets current needs. After that criterion is met, it is a good idea to see how the chosen site can take care of projected wishes as an individual grows older and requires more services. Asking questions very often will help a person gain perspective on what their desires are when entering later stages of life and can provide them with a great sense of security.
