Everybody knows what a nasal spray is. It is an instrument operated by a hand-pump, which contains a liquid substance. This substance is released in the patient’s nose as a fine mist. Other names for it are nasal mist or nebulizer.
The many uses and purposes of a nasal spray include the combat and palliation of the medical condition named nasal congestion. The main component of nasal sprays is saline water. It also contains other safe substances, which makes it easy to get in a pharmacy, without the need of a medical prescription. Even so, if a patient keeps using the nasal spray for more than three days, a rebound effect will install and the nasal congestion might increase. This medical condition is named rhinitis. Patients who have severe allergies or cold should especially be careful when using nasal sprays.
To treat this side-effect, rhinitis, one must use a nasal spray based on steroids. In order to get such a nasal spray, a medical prescription might be needed. For optimum effectiveness, the continuous use is highly recommended. Steroid-based nasal sprays do not treat only severe allergies and colds but they can also be used after nasal surgeries (i.e. polyp removal). Side effects like drowsiness, weakness and nasal irritation are associated with the use of these types of nasal sprays. Other side effects, which are not so common, include acne, bruising, hirsuteness, nosebleeds and sore throat.
Respiratory problems are not the only ones that can be treated with nasal sprays. A spray based on a chemical substance named oxytocin (substance which stimulates social behavior) has been known to ease the symptoms of autism. All this was made possible with the help of in-vitro and in-vivo testing and studies made for nasal and inhalation products. The thorough analysis of biological samples also helped with the creation of the oxytocin spray. Related experiments, recently made on autism sufferers determined that by inhaling oxytocin, they slightly changed and improved their ability to perceive emotion and displayed conventional social behavior.
Not having side effects, the oxytocin spray was proven to be safe and can be used at any time, when needed.
