The Issues Involved In The Dispute About School Uniforms

Most individuals can easily recognize corporate apparel because for years business people have been known to wear clothes which are similar to one another. People also recognize school children that wear uniforms as almost always the name of the school is considered embroidered apparel with the school’s name and logo on the shirt or jacket the students are required to wear. It is this sameness that has led to a nationwide debt about whether or not school children should be forced to wear uniforms at public school. There are of course, two different viewpoints from which to view the effects of school uniforms, so it is important to know both and understand how people from the two opposing parties view the subject.

One way that school boards and other decision makers look at school uniforms is the negative way, in which students are forced to look the same as everyone else and not be individuals. Some parents look at clothing as a way for their children to express themselves and their individuality. They argue that school uniforms give the impression that students should want to be average and just fit in with the rest of the crowd. Some parents and teachers believe that being able to express beliefs through clothing is pretty much imperative to the social learning aspect of elementary school through high school and to mandate uniforms would be taking that learning experience away from students. For example, quite a few parents believe their child needs to learn to treat everyone with respect no matter what kind of clothes they wear which they feel that lesson is possibly lost in a school with uniforms.

The second way that people look at school uniforms is the positive way, in which students are taught respect by wearing a uniform. A large amount of other countries and many private schools in the United States use school uniforms for their pupils. Parents have argued that it makes their lives more enjoyable at home because they do not have to argue with their kids in the morning about what is appropriate and what is inappropriate to wear to school like some public school parents whose children do not wear uniforms. Also, others believe that with uniforms there are not as many problems in schools when it comes to social classes. Since different people from different backgrounds come to public schools, there is the possibility of problems as far as social status without uniforms to keep social class problems to a minimum. Yet another argument for uniforms is the idea that there are less likely to be distractions in the classroom when people are wearing the same thing. For example, uniforms mean that students could not wear clothing that might be distracting and inappropriate at school.

Most of the time public school boards, that are elected officials, will vote on whether or not their school will mandate the use of uniforms. However, debates usually continues as parents either agree or disagree with whatever their school board decides on the issue.

It is important for parents and teachers to be well informed on the topic, since uniforms are a decision that affects their children. School uniforms are certainly not things that will go away anytime soon and it is certainly a heated issue that will not go away anytime soon. It will be interesting to see what happens to the trend of school uniforms in the coming years as the debate about whether to mandate them in public schools continues.
