All good online tutors have the ability to motivate their students, and make learning fun and entertaining. As you have already been through the stressful exam and education system you can fully understand just how important it is to have a great learning environment. One of the main roles of an online tutor is to do exactly this, it will also motivate the student to learn and excel.
Research tells us that students who understand why working hard and focusing on their studies and the benefits they will receive as a result are much better motivated than those who cannot. By showing or explaining to your students the benefits and the bigger picture will motivate them into working harder. If the subject area that the student is having difficulties with relates to their future career then you, the online tutor, can show him how doing well in this subject will positively impact their career prospects.
It is important to note that in general people dont like studying or learning something simply because they have been told to do so. People like to learn something when they are interested in it or can see that by doing so will largely benefit them in some way. If the online tutor can show them how it is going to benefit the student, whether it is financially, emotionally or physically it will help to boost the students motivation.
However, you may not find it easy to motivate younger students this way as they maybe to young to decide what they want from life in the future. When the online tutor has to teach younger students, it would be a great idea to teach them about the importance of studying specific subjects.
As an online tutor you can tell the younger students that if they have decided what they want to be in life, they will have to be good in English and mathematics because most of the entrance exams will have basic English and mathematics tests. If you want to encourage the younger students then you will have to ensure that your sessions are fun and entertaining.
Try and find a way of relating to students, integrating fun and their real life with learning. If you have a student in maths who feels they arent very good at maths try to relate maths into real life situations. They probably use maths ever day without thinking about, integrate learning with fun and the student will learn at a much quicker rate. Showing them a subject is interesting will immediately motivate them and get them working harder on that subject.
The majority of subjects that are taught by teachers at school will always refer to proper terminology. When you are trying to understand subjects terminology can often confuse and put off people. It can make it seem a lot more complicated than it actually is. You dont have to use the correct terminology until everything is understood; it may help the student grasp the subject much quicker.
My suggestion would be that the online tutor simply explains the subject or problem as clearly as they can until the student understands the problem and can see the solution. When the student in confident in the subject then introduce the terminology. When the student better understands the subject they are more likely to be motivated to do well in it.
If you are working with a student that has failed a certain subject previously then the chances are likely that they are going to be pretty de-motivated. It is therefore your jobs, as the online tutor, to build up confidence in the student by breaking the subject down and showing them step by step that they can be successful in this subject.
All great tutors, face to face and online tutors are a source of confidence and knowledge that help students help themselves, by guiding them through their problems making them realize the solution themselves. An online tutor has the many advantages of being online where the lessons are often more engaging and fun.
