Hypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of several myths created by layman’s imagination. Some believe them to be some type of magic while others hesitate to even acknowledge them. Provided below are some general beliefs associated with hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.
Hypnosis has no link with any sort of mystical arts. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. The genuineness of hypnosis is suspected even by people who have watched it working on subjects. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Hypnosis can be done on anyone regardless of his or her levels of will power.
That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another myth that has been doing the rounds. A hypnotized person is totally aware of his surroundings. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is hence able to focus fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.
Another misconception, which has been circulated by some researchers, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of the human population. Although, the research has some element of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the scientists used the identical hypnosis technique for everyone. One hypnosis technique for all is not a workable answer as different individuals fall under different character types, and therefore respond to different techniques.
People also tend to associate hypnosis to meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal experience that has got nothing to do with communication, on the other hand communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. The state of trance is not a hypnotic state either. The individual doesn’t communicate to achieve a state of trance, whereas hypnosis is not possible without communication.
A majority of people believe that it is not possible to bring about changes in one’s appearance and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot alter the body in abnormal ways. However, it can propel the body to a healthy shape through behavioural changes like eating in a controlled manner, and giving up smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a high level of motivation in an individual.
If a person falls for all the wrong notions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a happier and healthier life.
