Twitter uses the very basic what are you doing now? shareable information bar like the one used on Facebook, and uses it as the main feature of a site with the main focus on sharing real-time information, pictures, links etc all about what youre doing at that very moment.
Twitter is essentially, a massive database of people whore all interested in different topics. If you tweet about a particular topic on a regular basis, then others whore interested in that topic, and like what you write will follow you. Your words can then influences their thoughts on that topic and over time youll build up a large following which can be converted into business leads for your company.
So how does it work?
Step one is to set up your own free Twitter account, you can see an example of an account at twitter.com/Deeho
It is advisable to choose a username that is related to the topic that you plan to tweet (write) about so that people interested in your subject can find you.
You will then need to add some more information to your account such as some personal details, your website address and a small biography. This biography is searchable within Twitter so you should make it keyword rich in order for people to find you.
Tweeting itself is so simple it doesnt even need explaining. You have 140 characters to use to write your tweet about what youre doing or thinking about at that particular moment.
You can simply write a short comment about what youre doing / thinking, or you can do what most people do and use an attention grabbing, bold sentence or headline to then place a link back to your site where the rest of the story or blog entry is. Most people use Twitter to drive traffic back to their main site in this way.
This is using Twitter in its simplest form. Twitterfeed.com can be used to automatically post every blog entry you make in your normal blog onto your Twitter page in minutes.
You can also use http://bit.ly to shorten your blog URL and also to post your entries into Twitter. Most tweeters use this technique as it saves them having to paste everything they write into Twitter again and again.
