There was a time whenever the phone company did not use the same 10 digit number style that they are currently using. It was only whenever telephoned really began to take hold and they needed a way to differentiate between the numbers that this type of numerical system came into place.
Another reason why they switched to the new numerical system is the fact that they were trying to automate many of the systems that were within the phone company itself. Before the 10 digit system was in place, an operator would sit at a switchboard and manually connect the different numbers that were calling each other. Automation required a more effective way of being able to tell where the call was coming from and where it should be routed to.
Although all of us are familiar with the 10 digit system that is now in place, it is kind of interesting whenever you break it down into its various aspects in order to understand each of them separately. Here is a little bit about the telephone number, and what you can learn whenever you truly understand what is behind it.
The area code is found in the first three digits of the telephone number and it is a number that is assigned to a specific area within the country. These areas tend to be rather small but in some instances, they can span across several different towns and in rare instances, and even cross state lines. There are other cases in which the area code is assigned to a specific city and if there are enough telephone lines within the city, several area codes might be assigned to it.
Whenever the phone company first went to the 10 digit numerical system, there were plenty of area codes that were available. It is unfortunate that they didn’t have the foresight to see that there would come a day when ever cellular telephones and fax machines would be using up a lot of the area codes quite quickly. Although there still are area codes and telephone numbers that are available, we may reach a day whenever the system needs to changed once again.
The next set of three numbers that exist in the telephone number system help you to identify even further where the call is coming from. Most small areas within the city or a single town will have one of these three digit numbers assigned to it. It’s just another way of you breaking down even further where it is that the call is originating from.
If you would like to be able to trace a telephone number back to its original caller, using all 10 digits will be necessary. You can look up the area code on one of the websites that is available on the Internet, and even find out a little bit more information about the following the next three digits. Using the entire 10 digits, however, will help you to know exactly who it was that was calling and where they were calling from.
