It’s a lot of fun to blog, but it can get old fast if no one is visiting! Getting your blog to the top of the search engines for your main key phrases should be your goal to make this traffic happen. Keep in mind that it will take time, but it’s very possible.
You’re going to need to learn about Search Engine Optimization to make this a reality. The very basics of this is knowing which keywords to focus on. These are what people are searching for in the search engines, and how they might find your blog. Some of these keywords get a lot more searches than others get, so it’s in your best interest to eventually choose the ones that do get searched for often. Keep in mind that these are often more competitive than ones that are searched for less — but you might get lucky.
For the time being – just concentrate on your main keywords. Find a large one that will take more time to rank for, and a few others that you want to be known for. All of these words should somewhat the same! When you’re writing a blog post, you want to make sure they are used a few times throughout your piece. Be sure to use your main term, and then make use of the others, if it sounds natural. As you use those related terms, the search engines with put your page and blog higher in the results because your content is closely aligned with what you’re trying to rank for.
But this isn’t simple. Many times rankings are based on how many links you have pointing to your site. You much do other things to get links which are relevant pointing to your main page and blog posts. This can be accomplished with directories, guest writing on other sites, social media and purchasing of links (but this isn’t something that others recommend.)
At this point, you just want to keep cranking out the content, consistently over the course of time. Make sure that what you’re writing about is related to your main key terms. Yahoo! and the other search engines really like it if you’ve been at it for a while and keep writing and posting. They will send you more traffic if you’ve got history and keep writing about the same topics. These search engines want to make the search result as close as possible to the pages that it indexes. When you have pages that are similar to your key terms over and over, then you will be ranked more often and usually much higher.
The last thing to keep in mind is that searches engines follow people – not the other way around. If you write for people and make it fun, people will follow and come to your blog. They will love you and you’ll get a loyal following. The search engines will know this and then they will rank you higher. In this process, those people who love you will also link to you -the search engines will also recognize this and reward you with more traffic. It’s a beautiful thing! Who knew that being YOURSELF could be so rewarding?
