Discs are comprised of rings of fibrous material with a hard viscous center. If cracks appear in the stringy rings, the gelatinous material in the center may start to push out, therefore, resulting to a slipped disc.
Having a slipped disc does not necessarily mean that a disc has truly slipped. The term only suggests that something has moved out of its proper place. Slipped discs are in fact bulging discs.
Meanwhile, a slipped disc can also cause other disorder symptoms like pain down the back of the leg (sciatica), numbness or weakness.
The Slipped Disc Treatment
In this article, our focus will be the chiropractic approaches in slipped disc treatment. Chiropractic treatment targets realigning the spine to relieve the pain and promote healing.
Following are the two main approaches of chiropractic slipped disc treatment:
“Pelvic Blocking” Technique – Cushioned wedges are used and positioned under the sides of the pelvis along with gentle exercises. In this way, the force of gravity is allowed to readily take place. Changes can also be done to redirect the disc far away from the nerve.
The common disc injury treatment is made up of a sequence of non-force treatments with observation and assessment. Should there be no signs of improvement, it is strongly recommended to refer the patient to another spine specialist. In this case, the chiropractor could still treat the patient through co-managing with the specialist.
“Flexion-Distraction” Method – In this technique of slipped disc treatment, the spine is stretched using a specialized table, which also allows the chiropractor to isolate the area of disc involvement, while bending the spine in a pumping rhythm. There is no pain in this treatment.
The flexion-distraction technique is the most applied technique of treating symptomatic disc injuries involving leg and back pain.
Chiropractic Slipped Disc Treatment Does Not Use Drugs
Chiropractic slipped disc treatment does not recommend using drugs. Chiropractic techniques lessen the spinal nerve stress, thus, developing natural health through the body.
