As the world struggles under increasing levels of environmental pollution and global warming, carbon offset is acting as a ray of hope by motivating companies and governments to cut their carbon emissions.
Carbon offset is a method of reducing the emission of hazardous greenhouse gases by using different ways like sustained reforestation initiatives, green and renewable energy usage etc. The carbon credits plan of the 2005 Kyoto Protocol, an international environmental treaty ratified by 170 countries in 2005 fixes the emission limits for countries, which further determines allowable emissions by industrial entities.
The Protocol makes it mandatory for commercial entities emitting more than the permitted limit of carbon dioxide to cut down their emissions to prescribed levels, or they must buy carbon credits certificates which can be traded in the market, or alternatively pay a penalty for the emissions, which is known as carbon tax. One carbon credit, which is an older instrument than carbon offset, authorizes the credit’s owner to discharge 1000 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the air, and this method is the most economical way of purchasing an allowance to release excessive greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Both global and local companies, to make their operations carbon neutral and improve their image in front of customers and investors, are increasingly purchasing carbon credits.
Another excellent method is using carbon offset, which helps in financing ambitious environmental schemes, especially in third world nations that are constantly struggling to fund such projects to reduce the impact of the total greenhouse gas emissions. It helps in promoting clean and renewable energy choices like tidal energy, solar power etc and other nature conservation initiatives like reforestation.
Ordinary individuals are also doing their bit and are purchasing carbon offset to make the environment less polluted and to spread awareness about environment preservation. Carbon offset can be conveniently purchased online through one of the many providers, but caution must be taken to make sure that your funds are channelled to the right projects.
However, we must keep in mind that buying carbon offset does not take away our responsibilities, and that all of us can perform an important part in decreasing our carbon footprints by bringing small changes to our daily lives. What we can do additionally on our part to safeguard the environment is to take up small steps like using renewable fuels such as biodiesel, and buying LED lights in place of high-energy bulbs, and consume only as much energy as is necessary.
Carbon offset is still an alien word for ordinary people. Mass awareness on the subject through extensive education is required to bring us some steps closer to a pollution free and healthy environment.
