Owning a Home based business is one of the most rewarding things you can do with your life, but it requires a lot of hard work and doing research. Most people perceive home businesses as easy and convenient, but it is not easy at all. If you do your homework you will easily avoid most of the common mistakes made by people who will fail at home based business.
The first step is to decide what type of business you’re going to do. What product or service are you going to sell? You need to make sure you’ve got an idea that your target audience will feel is indispensable–because if they think they can do without your gadget, they probably aren’t going to buy it. You need a marketable, in-demand product or service to sell, or your business will probably not get off the ground.
Next, where are you going to base your business? Is it going to be the family room? Then what are you going to do with the family? Think carefully about how much space you will need and where you can locate your business to make it accessible for clients and out of the way of the family. Do your homework – call an expert on tax laws and find out how much space in your home you can legally deduct for business use. Call you zoning board and find out what types of permits you must have to do business from your home.
Once you get your permits you will be ready to buy your product to sell it and make some money. Make sure whatever you sell, gives you enough profit margin so that you can continue to sell it. Most home business owners think their overhead is basically nothing, so they commit the error of pricing the product too low. You want to set a good enough price for your product so that you’ll be in profit. Make a list of everything you have to buy during the month for your business such as office supplies, extra utilities being used due to business, and all the other little small things that will be involved with paying for your new office. Then once you have a monthly price you should price accordingly so you can make the profit you want to attain.
OK, now you are set for business, what are your hours going to be? You may think working at home means you can work any hours, but in fact it’s not true. How can you work late at night if your average customer does business from 9 to 5? You can’t. Your business hours must be convenient for your customers and, if you really want to be successful, your hours should be the same every week. Your customers want to feel confident that they can reach you when they need to. It’s okay to switch on the answering machine while you are out to lunch (OK, Not out, but in the kitchen), it’s probably not going to increase business if you switch on the answering machine while you go work in the yard because business is slow.
Now, tell me how your family is going to respect your business hours and not bother you while you work. Good Luck. I know it can be done, but you will have to communicate well with your family about what is acceptable and what is not. Some home business owners have a suite with a separate entrance that is not connected to the inside of the house. This works well, the family has to go outside and knock on the door to speak with the business owner during work hours. However you achieve it, the understanding must be clear that when you are working, you are working.
You will need to establish a backup plan in case your business grows out of your office and you need an assistant to do the busy work. So think about your choice of office area when you are making the decision at the start, only if you plan on expanding though. Just make sure that you can deal with outgrowing your home office. Set up a plan to transition into a larger office space once your business grows to another level.
