Laptop Computers–Batteries

by Blythe Ruzarrio

One of the biggest complaints against laptop computers today is battery life. In the beginning, laptop batteries didnt keep the system up and running for very long. Battery life has been extended with new technologies, but like microwaves just not heating fast enough; we still want computer laptop batteries to last longer.

NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) is the oldest battery technology and is used the least today. NiCad batteries are heavier than the newer technologies. NiCad is not environmentally friendly (green) as it contains heavy metals, which cannot be disposed of in landfill sites. Most laptop manufacturers have stopped producing batteries of this type chemistry. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) are less likely to be prone to the memory effect (where batteries gradually lose their maximum capacity) and have a much better power to weight ratio than NiCad. These batteries are also being phased out by most manufacturers. However, many have lithium-ion versions that are compatible. Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) is becoming the dominant technology because it has excellent power to weight ratio. This is really important because no one wants a heavy laptop to carry around. Another positive for Li-Ion is that it doesn’t suffer from the memory effect at all. These batteries do have a tendency to lose charge quickly towards the end of their effective life span. If this happens the battery needs to be replaced.

Laptop batteries are always rated by voltage (V) and milliamp-hours (mAh). Voltage is the rate at which energy is taken from the battery. Milliamp-hours represents the capacity of the battery. The milliamp-hour rating corresponds to the run time of the battery and, therefore, the laptop. A battery with a high Milliamp-hour rating has a longer run time than a battery with a low milliamp-hour rating.

Batteries with different milliamp-hours can be used on a laptop provided the voltage rating is the same. The voltage rating has to match that of the original. Using a battery with a different voltage setting can seriously damage the laptop. The power ratings of most compatible/replacement batteries are higher than the original manufacturers’ batteries. This will not damage your laptop but simply means that these last longer than original manufacturers’ batteries.

The run time of a laptop battery will vary on individual notebook computers, based on the applications being used (i.e. high graphics, games), the number of times something is saved or retrieved from the hard drive and/or CD Rom drive, the memory of notebook, and chemistry and capacity of the battery. A realistic average run-time for a battery is 1.5 to 3 hours. Using devices like a wireless adapter on the laptop also drains the battery considerably. The life of a battery under normal use is around 500 to 900 charge-discharge cycles. This is about one and a half to three years of battery life for the average user. As the rechargeable battery begins to fail, the running time of the battery begins to decline.

In recent years, more people have been taking advantage of innovative technological developments that allows them to create a spectacular home theater system. When creating your own home theater, you have a variety of features to choose from such as the video projector. If you are designing and building a home theater, you have to consider what type of projector you should acquire.

There are three types of main home theater projectors that include LCD, DLP or LCoS. LCD projectors consist of two types: models that utilize a single LCD to produce the picture, and models that use a blend of three LCDs. The difference between the two is that the projectors that utilize three LCDs normally create higher contrast pictures and higher quality color distribution.

The benefit of using DLP projectors is that they create richer colors and higher contrast ratios. Quality DLP projectors use three DLP chips to create the picture which allows the projectors to determine greater degrees of color and shade. DLP projectors normally cost more than LCD models

LCoS utilize liquid crystals to produce the picture. LCoS projectors are well known for creating the best quality images. LCoS models are more expensive than DLP and LCD models.

If you are mainly using HDTV programming, most experts will advise that you use a 16:9 projector on a 16:9 screen. This combination will give the best picture viewing. Most people will select a 16:9 screen as it fits with many different movie formats. Many DVD movies are wider than 16:9. When you play these movies on a 16:9 screen, there will be black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. In this instance, you may want to use a 4:3 format screen.

The best benefit of having a 4:3 screen is that it will usually permit you to display the largest picture. The 4:3 screen format provides one with more square footage of the total screen area for any particular screen width. This is useful when watching older films in a large format. If you are going to create a home theater for large scale 4:3 display, experts recommend, “that you use either a 4:3 projector or a 16:9 projector with a powered zoom lens of at least 1.3x zoom range.”

Before you select a video projector, you should mark on your wall where the screen will be located. You can then position your seat to determine what size screen will be suitable. You can take such considerations as the distance you will be sitting away from the screen and the best spot where you won’t be straining your eyes or working them to view the picture. The size of the image on the screen will be chosen on the basis of how comfortable you are with viewing the picture. You do not want to have to be moving your eyes back and forth and up and down to watch a movie.

Everyone has their own preferences on viewing screens. The greatest benefit of creating your own home theater system own home theater is that you can customize the projector and screen to meet your own personal needs. It is important to consult with a salesperson and read reviews about projectors for help with choosing the most ideal projector for your home theater system.

VMware Expands Its Horizons

VMware, a company that creates virtualization capabilities for computer servers, has a variety of new projects up their sleeve. Many of them are related to mobile desktop virtualization. One of their newest technologies was developed in conjunction with the Visa credit card company.

It is a technology that makes it possible for multiple mobile devices to exist within one mobile phone. To access a particular device, one need only click on the icon representing that device. Visa’s application employs one such device and allows Visa customers to know whenever their credit card has been used. When the card is swiped, the customer receives an alert on his or her phone.

There are a number of advantages to this new program. For one, this application would help to prevent credit card theft, or at least the prolonged usage of a stolen credit card. If one saw that their credit card had just been used and knew that he or she was not the one making that purchase, they could immediately contact the credit card company in order to investigate for fraud.

Visa’s servers could then track any further usage of the card to aid in apprehending the thief. Another advantage to the new program is that Visa sends customers advertisements and/or coupons that relate to their purchases. This could help the customer save money in the future, if they were already planning to purchase the related items.

The promotional offers that Visa would send to the mobile owner could be both a blessing and a curse. They would be a blessing if the customer really needs the items that Visa’s servers advertise. In that case, they would be saving money on their upcoming purchase.

However, if the customer does not really need the items that Visa promotes, yet they are convinced they should have them, needless spending occurs. My guess is that the latter would be much more common than the former.

Visa’s servers also utilize Google maps to direct consumers to nearby ATM machines. While this could arguably be a convenience, it could also promote reckless spending by making cash even more easily accessible to those enticed by Visa’s promotional offers.

Executives would begin to expect their employees to respond to them at all hours. Family time will suffer greatly, and blood pressure levels will escalate. Next time someone tells you about the freedom that the newest technology will bring, remember to look at all sides of the coin. Evaluate, are the servers really serving you?
