More and more organizations are researching the effects of bad lighting on the health and attitude of their employees. It makes sense that if poor lighting can effect employees in a workplace than so too can poor lighting effect people in their home.

The lighting systems of the past were simply not as bright or as efficient as today’s options, so many owner’s of older buildings upgrade their lighting fixtures so that they can benefit from technology and design developments.

One of the areas of interest will be the kitchen. Many older kitchens are equipped with just a ceiling light that attempts to light up the whole room. Additional lighting will not only make the whole room brighter but safer. Additional lighting can be placed under the cabinets. This is an area where shadows can fall due to the overhead cupboards. A little LED track lighting will illuminate your counters and make them safer. The ceiling light can be replaced by LED lighting. This will make the kitchen brighter and more cheerful.

Sitting rooms tend to have dark corners that can easily be fixed with accent lighting. Spotlights are great for such rooms and table and floor lamps are also excellent for bringing light to where there was once dull looking areas.

A mistake people commonly make is to make their bedroom too bright. This tends to create a harsh environment that is difficult to relax in. Dimming switches are a good idea if you need bright light occasionally but would like to be able to relax in a more romantic setting from time to time. Tiffany lamps use colored glass to uplift and relax people in the room and colored lights can be used to project soft yellows or oranges that bring a warm feeling to the room.

Kid’s rooms need to be bright and happy. Younger children will benefit from a dimmer switch that can allow them small quantities of light during the night and adjust to full light again in the day. As children get older they need different light accessories for things like study areas.

Bathrooms are often rather dull in older homes. Now with the new styles and different lighting fixtures on the market you can really have fun lighting up your bathroom. There are all sorts of task lights available and you can find stylish and practical ones to revolutionize your bathroom. Instead of that dull old ceiling light you can use different combinations of lighting fixtures. You can also use different colors and hues to create interest and fun in your bathroom.

By far, the easiest way to create a healthy feeling home is to take control. This means giving yourself options so that when you need more light you can get it. Conversely, if you would like a more relaxed feel you can adjust the lights to suit.
