Use social media for marketing and links, but don't rely on it. All the reports of hard drive crashes, people getting banned, and disappearing pages are true.
A best selling author on Amazon had her Facebook account frozen. A popular podcaster on CNET had his Blogger blog shut down. Magnolia lost their data, including hundreds of thousands of bookmarks… gone in an instant.
That's why social media sucks. If you don't own it, or control it, don't expect it to be there tomorrow. Treat all social media as temporary.
If you want your bookmarks to be safe, use your browser. If you want your content to be safe, host it yourself. If you want to sleep well, use an external drive to backup your data.
Then the next time a social media site bans your login, fails, crashes, or deletes your data, you won't have to care. You'll be back up and running in [...]
