Working from Home: Working Out The Stress
So you’ve finally achieved your ultimate goal of working from home. And, frankly, you’re about to go nuts.
As wonderful as working from home can be, the fact is that laboring in any confined space for a long length of time can result in emotions of boredom and isolation. How can you keep up your successful home office without contracting a nasty case of ‘cabin fever’ while you work?
The first step is to designate one part of your home as your ‘office,’ and other rooms as your living space. In that way, you don’t always feel like you’re ‘at work.’
In your working time, plan predetermined times in which you can escape to your living quarters. Some experts have suggested using a timer and working for 50 minutes and then resting for 20 minutes. Create some time to go take a nap, get a snack, take a shower, or watch a quick TV show.
In addition, try to get away from your home, and your home office, at least one time during the day. This may mean going outdoors for a short walk, or venturing to the neighborhood restaurant for a well-earned noontime feast. Or it could mean performing a work-related duty away from home, such as making copies or sending mail at a neighborhood post office, taking your laptop computer to a swimming pool or peaceful park, or meeting a client for a business meeting at his/her office or another location.
During your work from home experience, you can do a number of things that alleviate the boredom of your standard business day. You can listen to a radio station on the Internet or your home stereo, make a short phone call to a friend, or view a film on your computer or your office DVD player. In addition, Internet websites such as You Tube and Movieflix can provide fun distractions in the form of brief, entertaining videos; momentary distractions that won’t take away too much time or focus from the job at hand.
Another idea is to keep a favored article or magazine at your office; reading something of interest can be a good escape from the often repetitious work that you may do during the day.
Alternative ways of reducing your tension depend greatly on the schedule and budget of the home business employee. You could rent a local hotel room and work there, or even go to some other city for a few days to work. Tired of the same old scene? Take you laptop and make it a goal to work from every Starbucks in town; or plop yourself down at the local mall to work and go shopping on your breaks!
And, if all else fails, you always focus on the positive! A home business worker doesn’t have to be at work by 8:00 sharp, you don’t have to deal with irritating people who work with you. You aren’t stuck in rush hour traffic or dealing with idiots who cut you off. And most importantly, you are your own boss. You’re living the American dream!
Indeed, despite its stresses, working at home can be a rich, rewarding, and infinitely productive experience. Your home office can represent the best of both worlds, and become the ideal ‘home’ for your projects, ideas and ultimate success.
