If you own a small business and have a website that drives local traffic, you should pay close attention to the news about Google’s new search engine called: Caffeine. As part of the pre-launch research, Google has made available a sample of their new search engine for testing purposes. Check it out at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ (just copy and paste that url into your browser).You should definitely take the time to search for the keywords you are targeting, and see if there are significant ranking changes.

Caffeine hit my rankings in a bad way and it may hit yours too. When I searched withh local terms attached to keywords the number one spot is almost always dominated by webpages like Facebook, Twitter and ezine articles. Even though this will effect my traffic I have to take action now because Google’s new engine is on its way.

If your current SEO strategies do not incorporate using these types of Web 2.0 sites for link building, you could lose a lot of your earning potential very quickly. Now is the time to begin using these social sites to your full advantage. Content will still be king so get to writing as many articles as you can.

Begin posting content on web 2.0 vehicles like:

* Squidoo

* Blogspot

* Article Base

* Twitter

Don’t stop with that short list, find all possible sources of high authority social media that you can link back to your website. This will help your rankings with the Caffeine search engine as well as the current version.

You should also put into effect a plan for building links to the web 2.0 content that you create. This will give them more ranking power and begin to drive traffic from members of these sites as well. Traffic diversity will be very important in the near future.

This brings us to pay per click advertising as a means of getting traffic. As we begin to try and unravel Caffeine, payed search traffic can become a highly effective way to drive traffic. This will not be effected by the switch, so it will still be a lucrative way to drive targeted traffic. If you have used payed search then you should begin to expand your keyword base to capture more traffic. If you have never used payed search now is the time to begin your research and implementation.
