VMware Expands Its Horizons
VMware, a company that creates virtualization capabilities for computer servers, has a variety of new projects up their sleeve. Many of them are related to mobile desktop virtualization. One of their newest technologies was developed in conjunction with the Visa credit card company.
It is a technology that makes it possible for multiple mobile devices to exist within one mobile phone. To access a particular device, one need only click on the icon representing that device. Visa’s application employs one such device and allows Visa customers to know whenever their credit card has been used. When the card is swiped, the customer receives an alert on his or her phone.
There are a number of advantages to this new program. For one, this application would help to prevent credit card theft, or at least the prolonged usage of a stolen credit card. If one saw that their credit card had just been used and knew that he or she was not the one making that purchase, they could immediately contact the credit card company in order to investigate for fraud.
Visa’s servers could then track any further usage of the card to aid in apprehending the thief. Another advantage to the new program is that Visa sends customers advertisements and/or coupons that relate to their purchases. This could help the customer save money in the future, if they were already planning to purchase the related items.
The promotional offers that Visa would send to the mobile owner could be both a blessing and a curse. They would be a blessing if the customer really needs the items that Visa’s servers advertise. In that case, they would be saving money on their upcoming purchase.
It is really quite ingenious. Another of VMware’s partners includes Teradici. Teradici is based in Burnaby, British Columbia, and they are also working to develop PC-over-IP technology.
Will VMware continue to lead the way in this area of virtualization? They appear to have the technology on hand in the form of vSphere 4, and they have certainly aligned themselves with some other heavy hitters. Just how successful this endeavor will be of course remains to be seen, but VMware is definitely on to something.
Executives would begin to expect their employees to respond to them at all hours. Family time will suffer greatly, and blood pressure levels will escalate. Next time someone tells you about the freedom that the newest technology will bring, remember to look at all sides of the coin. Evaluate, are the servers really serving you?
