Small business owners may not have the resources to invest heavily in their web presence and finding solutions to problems can be like finding a needle in a haystack. You know something’s wrong but don’t have the faintest idea how to fix it. Is it a technical issue? Are your ads not performing well? Don’t know what kind of traffic you’re getting? You maybe should keep reading if you want how to improve your website.

1. You aren’t getting traffic. You’re excited about the big, expensive job the design team just finished on your site. Well it’s a shame it isn’t making you a cent. Just because it exists doesn’t mean people know about it.

You will find that an easy way to promote your site is by submitting it to reputable directories around the Internet. Whether it’s social bookmarking sites, networking sites, or article directories, it can make a world of difference.

Further optimize it for search engines by following good SEO practices, building quality content and generating inbound links from other sites. Once you do that, you’ll need to monitor progress with web analytics software. Google Analytics is free and it has a slick interface.

2) Setting up your site for failure can sometimes be a bit easier, then setting it up for success. I say that because most sites that are generated today for most businesses already have someone, somewhere, out there doing it already. So if the content on your site, and the product you provide, doesn’t set you apart from your top competitors then you are setting yourself up for failure.

Take a glance at the way the top competitor has theirs set up and use that as a measuring stick of where you need to go with yours. Make sure that you are creative, and try to stand out amongst others.

3. You have no call-to-action. Poor promotional language can have a sabotaging effect if visitors aren’t drawn to your conversion pages. A conversion page is any page that acts as the final step in a visitor submitting a form, making direct contact or purchasing a product online. Obscuring those pages or confusing the visitor on where to go next can make them leave your site. Remember, internet users have a short attention span.

Once you’ve done all of this, it’s important to keep track of how things are progressing. You will need to pull out your analytics software and figure out where your visitors are going. If you notice that no one is visiting a certain page, then you probably need to change it. Plus, you’ll want to know whether or not you have quality or quantity content. This will help understand the conversion rates.

Keeping your site simple is sometimes the best way to go. Try not to get cute with convoluted language, or multiple steps that make it a bit more difficult to use.

Unfortunately there will come a time when you get all kinds of traffic and no sales. When this happens you have to reassess why you’re not making any money. It could be due to the fact that you don’t have relevant traffic. To fix this you’re going to have to optimize your content appropriately to the keywords that don’t have a lot of competition. This way when people come across your business website, they’ll already be interested in what you have to offer. The only thing left to do is make sure your site closes the sale.

Then again, there are going to be other times when you’re traffic IS relevant and you still aren’t getting sales. There are many reasons for this, but you probably have a technical or navigational problem with the site. The best way to deal with this is make it routine to test all the functionalities. This would include the web browsers and all your systems. We always recommend you submit test forms and provide link checks for the site. One of them could be broken.

Making sure you have relevant traffic, a unique product, and making your site user friendly are just a few ways to set yourself up for success. Moving away from the web site problems, make sure you also investigate any part of the sales process taking part away from the website as well.

How Pay Per Click Marketing Developed

by Sean Galusha

Many online businesses and website owners have commonly used pay per click marketing in getting traffic to websites and eventually increasing profit. One of the reasons for this is that, pay per click is effective and cheap.

But when did pay per click started? And what does it mean to engage in pay per click marketing?

A man named Jeff Brewer introduced the concept of pay per click advertising in 1998. He was the one who founded Goto.com that started to implement the pay per click concept, but it was not yet known as pay per click marketing then. Years later, it was renamed Overture and in 2003, Overture was acquired by Yahoo! to make it their advertising tool which is known today as Yahoo! search marketing.

After the introduction of the pay per click concept in 1998, it was years later that Google made its own program adopting the concept. It was in 2000 that the Google Adwords came out. It was the company’s marketing tool using the pay per click system. However, it started with payment through impressions. The full adoption of the whole pay per click concept was only in 2002.

So what does pay per click mean?

The pay per click marketing method is an advertising tool that is used by website owners and online business owners to promote their products on the Internet. Like in the usual advertising, newspaper, Television and radio companies allocate ad spaces for businesses. In online advertising, website owners have spaces in their websites intended for ads online.

However, because there are millions of websites online and by just placing an ad on a certain website is not quite reliable in giving the business a significant impact with regard to advertising, pay per click marketing was conceptualized. Pay per click allowed ads in websites but also incorporates a technique that businesses can only pay for advertising if users are interested and clicked on the advertisements.

Like in the usual advertising where companies and businesses pay for an advertising cost when they place their ads on certain medium like Television, radio or print, pay per click also involves an advertising cost but it is more reliable because you only have to pay when potential customers are interested in your ad and click them.
